What is a Creative Sentence?
According to the Government of Alberta, Creative Sentence is a term used to describe the various options in a section of legislation that covers court orders relating to penalty (Government of Alberta, 2025).
Creative Sentences are a type of Restorative Justice that involve the affected victims, perpetrators, and community members, in an effort to repair harm done.

We honor the life of Brandon Nelson, a devoted husband, son, brother, and friend, whose vibrant spirit touched everyone he met. Born and raised in Fort McMurray, Brandon pursued excellence in all he did from his dedication as a Red Seal Journeyman Heavy Duty Mechanic to the love and laughter he shared with family and friends. He and his wife, Charissa, built a life filled with adventure, travel, and deep devotion to one another. Brandon’s kindness, determination, and joyful energy continue to inspire those who knew him.
Brandon is the inspiration for the creative sentence currently awarded, a process designed to honour his memory by advancing efforts to make rigging, hoisting, and lifting practices safer and prevent similar tragedies. In this way, his legacy extends beyond cherished memories, contributing to lasting change that will protect the lives of others.
How did the Creative Sentence lead to the ABRSC?
After hosting two major community events, and 170 meetings with experts throughout Alberta and beyond, it became clear that Alberta needed its own registered Council.

Serve as a resource hub
Standardize rigging and hoisting
An amendment to the originally proposed Creative Sentence was approved by the judge in June 2026, to allow for the creating of a new Council, specifically for rigging and hoisting.
The purpose of the ABRSC is to protect workers through education, training, standardization, and community building.
